Time Consuming Process of Finding a Job

Have you ever wondered, why does it always take so long time to find a job? Personally, I was really frustrated in the beginning of my career. Of course, I didn’t have much of a work experience, but even after I got some, it was still very difficult to find anything, no matter for how many positions I have applied to.

Working now in Agile Search, and “sitting in the opposite side of the table” I finally understood why it took me such a long time. Now, when I have interviews with the potential candidates, I could clearly see if the person knows what he/she really wants. If yes, then we proceed further, if not, then the process usually stops there.

I have applied for every single job with the same cover letter and CV

Seeing the candidates, who aren’t sure what kind of job do they want, what type of the company they would like to work for, reminded me myself after graduation. I didn’t have any idea what do I want to do. I have applied for every single job with the same cover letter and CV and “surprisingly” I wasn’t invited for any interview. It brought me a lot of frustration, anger and all kind of emotions, so I decided to stop sending piles of applications and try a different approach. I started participating in different volunteer projects, events and in general just be very active. I met many talented people through these projects, got new friends and expanded my network, it was a really joyful time for me. The most important thing what I have realized during this time is what do I really like and want to do.

After a while, through my network, I got to know one start-up company, which had an interesting idea, so I contacted the CEO of the company saying that I really like the idea and would like to talk about it a bit more, later on we had a meeting and I joined the team the same day as a trainee. Personally, I recommend everyone to join start-ups, because there you will really learn a lot. After a while I got a full-time contract with this company and worked there for around 2 years. That’s how my professional journey has started in Finland. Now I am working in Agile Search, and the way I got this job wasn’t through applying or contacting the company, but by recommendations of the people with whom I worked in the volunteer projects.

don’t give up, be persistent, be active, be ready to give something first

Regarding the question, what I have asked in the beginning of this blog, I have realized that the reason why it takes a long time to find a job is because we need some time to realize what do we want, some people realize it faster, and some slower. For me it took more than two years of trying different things in different areas. So, I would advise to everyone who is looking for a job, don’t give up, be persistent, be active, be ready to give something first (e.g. work for free) and your perfect job will find you itself.
